Coaching for Results

Coaches of all types are in the business of driving behavior change. In order to successfully initiate and maintain behavior change, people move through three specific stages we call Enlighten, Encourage and Enable. Each stage represents a milestone; if successful, clients transition from adopters to maintainers of new behaviors.

The Three Stages

From Awareness to Sustained Change

Enlighten

Before anyone begins to change, they must first be aware of what they want to change. Clients become more aware of signature strengths and development areas. Feedback methods such as 360-degree assessments are helpful in this stage.

Encourage

Not all people who are more aware are equally motivated to change. Coaches can help using motivational interviewing techniques and skill building to facilitate clients' readiness to take action toward change.

Enable

For change to be sustained, clients need to track progress, reward success, and build support systems. Coaches help build relapse prevention plans and cultivate factors that support sustained change.

Change Is Not Linear

Successful behavioral change is often NOT linear but can be progressive, regressive, or even static. Clients may pass back and forth through each of the three stages due to contributing elements including coach factors, client factors, and environmental factors.
